A Ferry Ride and Fort Casey

Ailey had Veteran's Day off from preschool, so since she had asked a few times lately to take the ferry from Mukilteo over to Whidbey Island ("where Aunt Sarah's friend lives!") I thought that day would be a good opportunity. I've lived in Mukilteo for five years and have never taken the ferry from here, so we got to drive in some new lanes, go through a different stop light, and see Mukilteo from a new perspective.

Marin and Silje weren't too keen on driving onto the ferry or sitting there for 20 minutes. It was scary, what with the new noises and being closed in. On the way over to Whidbey we at least got to park on the side with a water view so we could look at the birds and generally be able to tell when we were moving and when we stopped.

Fort Casey is about a half hour drive from the other side of the water. We had a beautiful, though cold, day and made two stops within Fort Casey. We went first to the Lighthouse, with Marin and Silje in the stroller and Ailey on a very short "leash" - have you seen those crazy drop-offs down to the water?! We then drove down to the large lawns leading to the artillary post so that Marin and Silje could run around a little before piling into the car again and heading back to the ferry.

We had snacks on the ferry ride back to Mukilteo - a good distraction from the closed-in space of the middle of the boat, which is where we ended up. Marin and Silje were glad to get home and down for naps - who knew a drive could tire them out so fast?!
